   Instructions to the Authors


The TNOA Journal of Ophthalmic Science and Research is a quarterly, peer reviewed journal devoted to the dissemination of the latest in ophthalmology to practitioners all over the state and country. It invites submission of original work dealing with clinical and research work.

Manuscript Submission

 All manuscripts must be submitted online by email to the editorial office (editorjtnoa@gmail.com)as of now.

The submissions should be made in MS Word, with double spacing, margins, font size of 12. We are in the process of trying to create an online submission portal, the information regarding which will be soon provided.

Editorial Process

The manuscripts will be reviewed for possible publication with the understanding that they are being submitted to one journal at a time and have not been published, simultaneously submitted, or already accepted for publication elsewhere. All manuscripts submitted to this journal will be sent for peer review process by any two experts in their respective fields, in a blinded fashion. The authors will be sent intimation regarding the receipt of the article, and will be updated regarding the status of review process regularly. Any corrections in the manuscript suggested for accepted articles should be sent back within 10 days . A covering letter must be enclosed and should include a statement regarding transfer of copyright of the work to the TNOA Journal of Ophthalmic Science and Research.

Clinical Trials Registry

All clinical trials from India must be registered with “clinical trials registry – India” . The trials conducted outside India may be registered with any other clinical trial registry. The Indian council of medical research has recommended to make it mandatory to have registration number for all clinical trials submitted for publication from January 2009

Types of Manuscripts and Limits

Eminent Ophthalmologists Journey / Experience

These are invited articles by the editorial board, to highlight the contribution and experience of individuals in the field of ophthalmology. This will serve as a tribute to the achievements of stalwarts and will t inspire the younger generation to aim higher. The word count should be up to 1500.

Remembering the past

This section will include a brief history of the person credited for important inventions in ophthalmology, and how they stumbled upon their path breaking ideas with a limit of word count for text up to 1500.

Original Articles

Randomized controlled trials, intervention studies, Outcome studies, case control series and surveys with high response rate come in this category. The word count limit for structured abstract is up to 250 words and text up to 3000 words and references upto 30.

Review Articles

This will include critical assessments of literature and data sources. The limit of text is up to 4000 words excluding about 90 references and abstract up to 250 words.

Case Reports

New, interesting, rare cases with clinical significance or implications with a short summary of about 150 words and text word count up to 1000 words excluding up to 10 references.

Surgeons Corner

This will include innovative or new surgical technique developed by the author along with the merits, with illustrations and video.

Experts Opinion

This is case history with opinion from experts in the field regarding diagnosis and lines of management. The history should be complete along with relevant investigations done with word limit up to 1000.

Current Research

It should summarize the latest developments in a particular field with a limit of word count for text up to 2500 and abstract up to 250 and maximum 30 references

Journal / Book Review

Should briefly comment on the highlights of any current book / journal article with a word count of up to 800.

Residents Corner / Photo Quiz

Any mind teasers for the residents will be welcome (quiz, MCQ etc) with word count up to 500.

Industry Update / Opticians Corner

A brief report from manufacturers of equipments, instruments, drugs , opticians about any product launched recently in the market for a page ( up to 500 words) , which can be followed by the relevant product advertisement .

Events Calendar

Announcements of conferences, meetings, courses and any items should be submitted along with contact person’s details.

Preparation of the Manuscript

  • Covering letter (including statement of copyright transfer)
  • Title Page
    • Type of manuscript
    • Title of the Article
    • The name of each author (Last name, first name , initials of second name with his / her highest academics degree(s) and institutional affiliation , email address
    • Corresponding Authors name, institutional affiliation and email address
    • The total number of pages  and photographs , word counts for the abstract and text
    • Financial disclosure and sources of support (grants / equipments / drugs...)
    • Registration number of clinical trials registry
  • Abstract

For original articles state the aims, materials and methods, statistical analysis, results and conclusion followed by three to five key words. Abstract need not be structured for review articles, case reports and current research.

  • Introduction

State the purpose and summarize the rationale for the study or observation.

  • Materials and Methods

This will include the selection criteria for cases / participants clearly and method of selection, randomization, blinding. State the methods, apparatus, procedure, drugs and chemicals used including routes of administration in sufficient detail.

  • Ethics

When reporting experiments on human subjects / animals please indicate if the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee.

  • Statistics

Specify the statistical methods used to analyze the results.

  • Results

Present your results in a logical sequence. Do not repeat in the text all the data from tables, graphs and illustrations, summarize only the important observations. Do not duplicate data in graphs and tables.

Tables – Number the tables consecutively in the order in which it is cited in the text, and supply a brief title for each.

  • Figures – should be in JPEG format / TIFF format with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi , upto 1 MB while uploading. Each figure should be numbered consecutively in the order in which it is cited in the text. Include legends for each figure (upto 40 words) with Arabic numerals corresponding to the illustrations.
  • Protection of Patients' Rights to Privacy: Identifying information should not be published in written descriptions, photographs, sonograms, CT scans, etc., and pedigrees unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (or parent or guardian) gives written informed consent for publication. Authors should mask patients' eyes and remove patients' names from figures unless they obtain written consent from the patients and submit written consent with the manuscript. When informed consent has been obtained, it should be indicated in the article and copy of the consent should be attached with the covering letter
  • Discussion

Include summary of key findings, strength and limitations of the study, interpretations and implications, controversies raised by this study, future research directions .

  • References

Should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they appear in the text. Identify the references in text, tables and legends by Arabic numerals in superscript. Use the style based on the formats used by the NLM in Index MEDICUS. List the first six contributors followed by et al.
